Extinosad Pour-On is Now Dead Faster, Dead Easier – Guaranteed!

Elanco Animal Health has upped the stakes in the Australian sheep lousicide market by offering a six-month lice control guarantee for Extinosad Pour-On when applied off-shears.

Brand Manager, Rob Alcorn, says Extinosad Pour-On has been used on more than 100 million sheep since its launch in 20081.

“Extinosad Pour-On has found a unique place in the market because it provides four important benefits,” Rob says.

“It’s unique, rapid knockdown chemistry makes it ideal for use in rotation programs to prolong the efficacy of all available treatments.

“It can be applied off-shears or to sheep with long wool, including unshorn lambs, providing complete flexibility in lice control programs.

“It has a nil wool withholding period and minimal 21-day ESI2, providing maximum flexibility in terms of future handling and marketing options.

“Finally, it is a convenient, odourless, water-based formulation.”

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority has approved a number of changes to the registered label of Extinosad Pour-On in recent months, including a new off-shears dose table.

The new off-shears dose table has five liveweight bands from 20 to 70 kg, increasing in 10 kg increments, while the dose rate for sheep heavier than 70 kg increases by 2.5 mL for every 5 kg increment above 70 kg.

“These changes will ensure less variation in the dose applied per kilogram of bodyweight between the lightest and heaviest animal in each liveweight band.

“In addition, the higher dose volume applied to heavier sheep will make it easier to apply Extinosad Pour-On as two even bands from poll to tail, thereby improving coverage.”

These changes do not affect the Wool Withholding Period (nil), Meat Withholding Period (14 days) or Export Slaughter Interval (21 days) for off-shears usage2.

Likewise, the dose rate table for use on unshorn lambs and long wool sheep (6–12 months wool) remains unchanged.

Elanco has also introduced a new low volume (15 mL) applicator, which will ensure easier and more accurate application of Extinosad Pour-On as two even bands from poll to tail on off-shears sheep (≤60 kg) and unshorn lambs.

“The existing Extinosad Pour-On 30 mL applicator is recommended for off-shears application to heavier sheep (>60 kg) and for long wool application,” Rob says.

“Alternatively, Extinosad Pour-On may be applied with a 30 mL Genesis Power Doser™ fitted with the Extinosad Pour-On four-hole T bar nozzle.”

“We have also updated the rain fastness claim of Extinosad Pour-On to now state ‘20mm in 20 minutes.

“This is based on the results of a pen study that showed the application of 20 mm of water over 20 minutes before or after application had no adverse effect on the efficacy of Extinosad Pour-On.

“Regardless, it is still good agricultural practice not to treat wet sheep or if rain is predicted within 12 hours of shearing.

Elanco has also clarified that it is not essential to pen sheep after treatment with Extinosad Pour-On.

“Extinosad Pour-On is spread over the body by passive diffusion and physical contact, such as rubbing with other sheep,” Rob says.

“While studies have shown that penning sheep closely in the yards immediately after application facilitates product movement, it is not essential after treatment with Extinosad Pour-On.”3

Rob says these changes will help to ensure Extinosad Pour-On continues to provide effective, consistent and flexible control of lice in field conditions.

“We guarantee it,” Rob says.

“In the unlikely event that lice are detected in treated sheep within six months of off-shears application, Elanco will provide customers a suitable replacement product at no cost to re-treat affected sheep.

“To qualify, customers must apply Extinosad Pour-On in accordance with the label directions, comply with Elanco’s lice management guidelines and register their purchase within 14 days of application through the Extinosad web page – www.extinosad.com.au.4
