Todd Price, agronomist with Nutrien Ag Solutions Strathalbyn, worked with Phil Eatts to test Thistrol Gold on his pasture in 2019 with results that surprised both. In Phil’s Mintaro sub clover pasture, the main weed pressure is from capeweed with secondary pressure from marshmellow.

Phil explained “I’ve tried a few different brews over the years, but I ended up landing with Tigrex® and Agritone 750 blend. The issues I’ve had is if you have any sort of a stressed environment on it, a few frosts or some warm weather on it at the wrong time, it can really set the sub-clover back badly. So, I’m trying to get something softer on the clover.”

Working with Nufarm’s Territory Manager Russell Meade, Todd and Phil introduced a URT of Thistrol Gold into half a paddock.

“We had Thistrol Gold at 2.2L per hectare with an oil compared to the old brew, and you can see the marshmellow and capeweed aren’t as stressed as they are with Thistrol Gold” said Phil.

Todd explained the difference of the pasture between the Thistrol Gold area and the previous brew “You can see the line, the cape weed control has done a really good job.” Even though the application of Thistrol Gold was a bit late in the season compared to recommended timings, the control of the established weeds whilst not impacting the nutrient rich clover, was still a gold medal performance.

“Next year I’m confident to go early and use Thistrol Gold across as much of my country as I can. It’s very, very soft on clover and we saw no ill effects at all. That’s what I want to see, I want to see my pastures keep on growing.”
