With both rainfall and temperatures having been above average during Spring, experts warn key sheep parasites could be a very high risk this summer.
Parasites love nothing better than warm moist conditions and will rapidly build up numbers on pastures. With every parasite producing thousands of eggs per day, a paddock can become heavily contaminated within 4-6 weeks. This poses a particular risk to our flocks this year and leading into 2022.
Barber's Pole worms are not confined to summer rainfall areas, it can also be a serious problem in temperate winter rainfall areas when the conditions are right. These conditions (daily maximum temperature > 18 degrees with adequate moisture levels) coupled with the prolific laying capacity of female barber's Pole worms mean that a small population can quickly become a serious problem.
If conditions in your area have been conducive to the reproduction of barber’s pole worms, we suggest that you undertake a worm egg count with a larval differentiation test to identify the problem.
Select the right drench when the results come back high for barber’s pole worms. This drench should be more than 95% (preferably >98%) effective. Combination drenches are more likely to achieve this efficacy, and their use will delay the onset of resistance.
Only persistent drenches, for example Cydectin Long-Acting Injection for Sheep and Tridectin can be used to reduce pasture infestation without affecting production.
Keep on monitoring by doing worm egg counts every 4-6 weeks to enable timeous treatment and avoid serious production losses.
Tridectin is an essential tool and the first choice for sustainable and effective worm control:
