According to a MLA report 2015 the estimated cost to the Australian Beef Industry due to Buffalo flies is $98.7M. This is the third highest endemic disease for beef cattle, behind cattle tick bovine viral diarrhoea virus.
Buffalo fly is a blood sucking insect that has a life cycle of 10 – 40 days. The buffalo fly reproduces in cattle dung, in favourable weather conditions of humid 25 – 35 degrees. The buffalo fly lives permanently on its hosts and a threshold of approximately 400 buffalo flies per head is deemed to be causing a production loss. Buffalo flies are a welfare issue and treatments will have a benefit.
