Nufarm Galaxy: the new generation of broadleaf weed control

Nufarm Galaxy is delivering impressive results for cereals growers across Australia, with a new approach to Group 27 herbicides.

As a straight pyrasulfotole product, Galaxy combines one of the most robust broadleaf herbicides on the market with the ability to adjust rates and mix partners throughout the growing season.

“The flexibility is the big advantage to Galaxy. It’s very useful for us to be able stock the active ingredient so we can mix it with bromoxynil in the early stage of the cropping program and then be able to swap it later to different rates or mix partners,” said Rik Maatman, Branch Manager and Agronomist at Nutrien Birchip. “Galaxy gives growers the choice of whether to mix it with MCPA LVE, bromoxynil or different rates of both actives. Up until now, we haven’t been able to use pyrasulfotole at higher rates or with different mix partners because it’s always been in a pre-mixed drum.”

Ryan Pearce from Prime Ag Services in WA agrees. Pearce sees a particularly good fit for Galaxy for oats and cereals growers in his area. “We used Galaxy with MCPA LVE and Saracen mix partners and it gave us the same control as we’d previously had with the existing pyrasulfotole herbicides,” said Pierce. “It controlled all the weeds that were present, including some volunteer lupins, capeweed and the odd radish, which can be very hard to kill. Based on the performance we’ve seen this year, we’ll absolutely be using it going forward. A Group 27 [like this] in the upper Great Southern will be really beneficial chemistry to recommend.”

Flexible rates of both pyrasulfotole and mix partners

Galaxy is a game changer in the post-emergent herbicide market, giving growers a choice of higher maximum use rates of both the active ingredient and mix partners. With little known resistance, this increased flexibility makes it good news for growers looking to manage a wide spectrum of hard-to-control broadleaf weeds, including Indian hedge mustard, sow thistle, capeweed, volunteer canola and wild radish.

“We can adapt the rate and the mix partner to the appropriate growth stage, and it’s giving us control across those problem broadleaf weeds,” said Maatman. “It’s really important for us to be able to make decisions about which chemistry we’re using and when. Galaxy gives us that choice.”

A new standard in broadleaf weed control

With Galaxy, Nufarm brings a more flexible pyrasulfotole to a broader range of growers and use patterns.

“Like a lot of cereals growers, we need Group 27 products to get control of weeds like Group 4 (I)-resistant radish. Galaxy does the job,” said Maatman. “The level of control is where we want it and the flexibility to use Galaxy where it fits is what makes it stand out. We’ll definitely be recommending it in the future.”

Nufarm recommends mixing Galaxy with Bromicide 200, Bromicide MA or MCPA LVE for best results.
