On a mixed farming operation near Grenfell in central west New South Wales, Tom Matthews, like most producers, doesn’t have the luxury of downtime. Farming alongside his father Harvey, wife Grace and family, Tom runs around 7,500 fine-wool Merinos while also cropping close to 1,000 hectares of canola, wheat, oats and barley. Like many mixed farmers, every decision is critical to profitability and maintaining a long-term, sustainable operation.
Summer fallow spraying is one of those pressure points. Narrow spray windows, harvest clashes and unpredictable summer storms mean the job has to be done right, first time. There’s no room for blocked filters or wasted mornings pulling nozzles apart.
“You might be harvesting, get a summer storm, and suddenly you have to spray straight away,” Tom explains. “That job has to be done that morning. You can’t afford any downtime.”
Like many growers, Tom previously relied on straight ammonium sulphate as part of his knockdown program. It was widely used and easy to access, but often created more problems than it solved. Mixing errors could quickly lead to gluggy product in the tank, blocked filters and nozzles, costing valuable time during already tight spray windows.
“If you got your mixing order wrong, which happens, you knew about it pretty quickly,” Tom says. “You would lose time pulling things apart when you couldn’t afford to.”
Those frustrations are what drove Tom to make the switch to OUTRIGHT 770. Fewer products in the mix meant fewer problems. Instead of juggling ammonium sulphate, oils and surfactants separately, OUTRIGHT 770 brings them together in one formulation, reducing complexity in the tank.
The difference for Tom, was immediate. Mixing issues disappeared and spraying became more straightforward. “Once we switched, all those issues were gone,” Tom says. “It just works, and you are not worrying about what is going to block up halfway through the job.”
OUTRIGHT† 770 removes guesswork and simplifies planning, which matters when spraying needs to be done quickly. Tom typically runs rates between 250 to 300 millilitres per 100 litres, using rainwater stored on farm and has found this to be the sweet spot for their system.
“I like that it’s not confusing,” Tom says. “We’re not working in percentages. We know what rate we’re using, and it works spot on for what we’re doing.”
“I’ve already started recommending it to other people,” Tom explains. “They have come back and said the same thing. It just works.”
