Autumn Woody Weed Control – Why Timing Matters More Than You Think

02/03/2026

As we move into March and early autumn, many landholders overlook what can be one of the most effective windows for woody weed control like Eucalyptus and wattle regrowth, Blackberry and Lantana. While summer spraying is common, autumn offers unique advantages — particularly when using the right herbicide, penetrant, and application technique.

Work With the Plant, Not Against It

During autumn, many perennial woody weeds begin shifting energy reserves from their leaves down into their root systems in preparation for winter. This downward sap movement can significantly improve the performance of systemic herbicides.

Products such as Gusto woody and noxious weed herbicide, when applied to actively growing plants under suitable conditions, can be effectively translocated into the root system at this time of year. Targeting weeds during this natural movement phase increases the likelihood of achieving long-term control

For best results, ensure plants are not drought-stressed and that soil moisture levels are adequate to support active growth.

Penetration Makes the Difference

Woody weeds are built to survive harsh conditions. Thick, waxy leaf surfaces are designed to repel moisture, which can limit herbicide uptake.

This is where a quality penetrant becomes critical. Holdfast penetrant and wetting agent improves wetting and penetration through the leaf cuticle, allowing the herbicide to enter the plant more effectively. In autumn conditions — where temperatures are milder but still suitable for growth — maximising absorption is key to achieving strong kill.

Coverage also matters. Even the best herbicide won’t perform if it doesn’t reach enough of the leaf surface.

Adding a marking dye such as Rhodamine Red spray marker dye provides clear visual indication of treated areas, helping operators maintain even coverage and avoid costly misses. In targeting multiple weeds, this simple addition can dramatically improve efficiency and consistency of results.

A Strategic Approach to Autumn Control

Autumn woody weed control isn’t about rushing to spray before winter. It’s about selecting the right conditions, using effective chemistry like Gusto, enhancing uptake with Holdfast, and applying accurately with tools such as Rhodamine Red.

With thoughtful timing and sound application practices, autumn can deliver some of the most reliable long-term control of the year.

Now is the time to assess infestations, monitor plant health, and plan your spray window — because when it comes to woody weeds, timing truly makes the difference.

Always read and follow label directions. Ensure products are suitable for your target species and situation before application.
